Winter is here, and safety is our top priority. Using Salt Smart practices, we can stay safe before, during, and after a winter storm. We all have a role to play in safety this winter, as a community, as a resident and as a commuter.
Community Action
As a community, we have an action plan for responding to winter storms. We train our staff to ensure they use the right deicing product in the right amounts, considering the specific conditions. Brine, a mixture of salt and water, allows us to get a jump on safe roads while using less salt. Look for the brine stripes on the road – they help prevent ice from bonding to the pavement, making it easier for our plows to clear the roads.
Resident Responsibilities
As residents, we can apply Salt Smart practices too! Check out this Salt Smart video on how to make and use brine at home for easier snow clearing. Remember, never push snow back into the road, as this creates dangerous road conditions right at your driveway. Keep fire hydrants free of snow for faster emergency responses and do your best to clear the sidewalks around your home. Always shovel first before reaching for the salt.
Commuter Safety
We all need to get to work or school, take our kids to activities or get something from the store. During a winter storm, consider delaying your travel if possible until the plow crews have had a chance to do their job. If you must go out, give yourself extra time, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles on the road and pack a safety kit for your car. Remember, don’t “crowd the plow” – give them ample space to do their job. The safest place to be is behind the plow!
